The Birth of Fatal Factions: Guild Wars.

Updated: Oct 31, 2023

Hello! My name is Brandon, and I'm the creator of Fatal Factions. Even though you will mainly see Fatal Factions: Guild Wars all over this website, there are actually two other games that take place in the same continent and timeline. We'll be focusing on Guild Wars for a while, but please look forward to other ways to play Fatal Factions!

There are several reasons why I created Fatal Factions: Guild Wars, but the most important reason is family. Back in the day, I was a big fan of Magic: The Gathering (Phyrexia for life) and introduced it to my then-girlfriend and her kids. We would have little tournaments with booster packs on the line, and we voraciously defended our colors of choice (mono-black or black/blue was my jam). Though the relationship dissolved, I stayed in the kids' lives for several years.

As kids often do, they grew up and started to leave the nest. As a way of hoping to bring distancing friends and family together, I wanted to create a game that brought back that spirit of fun and competition without having to spend hundreds on cards.

...I still spent hundreds on cards anyway, but at least it was over a longer period of time!

Another reason that brought me to creating this game is wanting a game that didn't have a rotating set of cards or a bunch of strategies that simply won't work. As stated earlier, I was a huge fan of Phyrexia, so not being able to use Infect and Proliferate legally all the time was not ideal. When I got into Eternal, I was tired of having all 10 of my little Grenadins that took 15 resources to make die to a Harsh Rule or Lightning Storm.

There were some things that I thought I could improve - especially in the realm of reducing randomness through Reshuffle tokens or the Arsenal - so I went to work and ended up with over 2,000 cards spanning 33 groups (or guilds, in this case). As I began to look at cards with a developer's mindset, I began to see some more things I could add to the game. I didn't want any cards that didn't connect to a mechanic or any strategies that could be completely countered. So, here we are.

I was not able to bring everyone together like I originally hoped. However, I did make some friends and learned a lot along the way. My hope now is that you cherish those same levels of fun and competition that I had with my family. I hope you get to fall in love with the Illusionists as you pummel the Mages into submission, or you make a deck based on your favorite Cybernetic/Blacksmithing combo as you mash the necromechs and blacksmiths together (even if it would never make sense in real life), or even dig into the lore of Amoas and find out why the Chronadax guild has come to heal and hurt the population.

I hope you enjoy the game! I'm looking forward to seeing you on the battlefield. I'll see you at the next post!
